Weekly Running Log Rundown

Hey hey hey! It is that time of week again–weekly running log rundown.

Early Madonna is my spirit animal. Getting back into the groove this week.

Sunday: Went to the Foothills for some trails. I ended up doing the Cobb Trail, making a loop back home. I have been getting more rest and felt much stronger today.

Take a moment to read the segment titles. Gotta love Boise people.

I am a Honey Stinger ambassador now, which is awesome because I genuinely love their stuff. This was today’s fuel. Tastes great, is made with organic honey, and goes down much easier than other gels.

Every time I go by this bus, I wonder how in the world they got it here.

Monday: Hot sunny day down by the river today. Lots of people out and about. I am feeling stronger but still not back to 100%. I am hoping that I start to recover soon as I have a full marathon coming up that is and has been my race focus for the last few months.

This series they are doing on Radiolab is so freaking gold! If you need something to listen to on your runs, check these out. So far I think there are four in the series by Molly Webster–Birthstory, The Primordial Journey, Fronads, and X & Y.

I also went for a hike with my family, my mom, and her husband.

Tuesday: I just didn’t feel like taking any pictures today. Today has been rough, so I ran it out. Running is my way of coping with life. I also ran into my aunt out walking. Small town Boise.

Wednesday: Took my mini on a 5k run and then myself on a 5k run.

Thursday: Rest off.

Friday: I love how easy it is to get out and into nature here. The City of Trees.

Next week is my marathon. Gah! Hope I am ready for it!

Saturday: I needed actually set my alarm–a summer cardinal sin–to get my run in before taking my children to their Run Wild at the Boise Zoo this morning. It felt really good running in the crisp morning air. I also listened to part of the new book Squeezed about the middle class in America and how they can’t afford life here–an important read.

 

The kids did awesome at their race. They met some of their friends there too, so they had some buddies to hang with.

(Mostly) Healthy Cookie Recipe

Healthy Cookie Recipe

These are great for a pre-run snack and a guilt-free treat. They have banana and oats, some pretty awesome running fuel.

Ingredients for the “dough” base:

3 overripe bananas (I freeze mine and pull them out when I am ready to use)

3.5 cups oats

1/2 cup any kind of milk

2-3 packets of Stevia

1 tablespoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon salt

*Non-stick spray for the pan

Optional:

Nuts and seeds, dried fruit, coconut flakes, cocoa powder, chocolate chips, cinnamon, almond flavoring, peanut butter, jam for topping

*combination variations I have done: peanut butter with jam on top (put jam on after cooking), almond flavoring with cranberries or dried cherries, coconut flakes and chocolate chips, coconut flakes and dried mango, poppy seeds and lemon flavoring, cocoa and coconut, pumpkin pie spice and nutmeg for the fall.

Thaw overripe bananas

For today’s healthy cookies I just used what was in the house. I didn’t have any dried fruit, so I went the chocolate chip route. Turns out I had butterscotch and white chocolate chips to throw in there too. Other versions would be healthier, but I figure dark chocolate isn’t the worst–antioxidants!

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mash bananas in a bowl.

Add milk, vanilla, Stevia, and salt.

Then mix in the extras. I put in sunflower seeds, chia seeds, almond flavor, cinnamon, and the three kinds of chips this time.

Spray your pan with non-stick spray. I used coconut oil spray.

You can plop them on the pan and let them take their own shape or you can roll them into a ball. I have even made them into different shapes for holidays, like hearts for Valentines using cookie cutters.

Bake them for 9-10 minutes.

Let them cool.

Eat with little guilt.

8 Motivations to Run

Need motivation? Here are some reasons to run.

Endorphins. It’s a fact, your emotional state will vastly improved when you start running. Those endorphins pumping through your body are powerful, making you pretty damn happy as a result.

Time to yourself. Think of running as time away to improve yourself, letting your mind be open to thoughts. It allows you to process what has happened or is happening in your life.

Audiobooks. For the readers and runners out there, audiobooks are a great compromise. Running takes up a lot of time. Deciding to combine these two aspects of your life provides not only a time save, but adds motivation when you have a good audiobook waiting for you.

Food. Raise your hand if you like food! We all do, but food tastes even better when you have worked for it. You also get to eat more to the foods you love and have few regrets. I mean, you get to eat tacos and not feel guilty about it. That is some motivation.

Change it up. Some of the ways one can do this is switching up the actual sport; go for a hike or swim or bike. You can also mix up your running by spending a day on hills, hit the trails or road, working on your pace, running with friends or joining a running group, and tackling different distances. Loop runs are great because you get new scenery the whole time.

New running clothes. I know it may seem shallow, but finding some new running clothes that you feel good in can be motivational. Some may consider “cute running outfit” an oxymoron, but look around for some funky colors and mix n’ match. It’s fun.

Races. Nothing says motivation quite like having a personal goal to work towards. If you can, try to book a race that allows you to see a new part of the world.

Overall health. This is sort of a no-brainer. You feel better, and consequently your quality of life goes way up. When you start running, you sleep better, a lot of those aches and pains go away, and you don’t feel so old. Motivation, check.

Mores Creek Summit

Okay, so we didn’t make it to the summit. We made it maybe half-way today. I figure it means we have a goal for next summer to make it to the summit.

We did a convoy thing with my mom and her husband to a trail that they randomly found a few years ago. It is about an hour or so away from home, so not bad. The drive is gorgeous. Windows down, Tom Petty on.

I put Lady H on my back and we started on our way. It is actually just a dirt road, not a single track, but we only saw two pick-up trucks while hiking. The day got hot quickly, we were all thirsty after about 5 minutes, and Lady H felt heavy going uphill. We were all in pretty good spirits though with no real need or desire to make it all 8 plus miles this time.

How lucky are we to have this wonderful woman hiking with us? My mom is pretty impressive–she still hikes up to 7 miles every day. She also is an amazing grandmother to her grandbabies.

Idaho views

After the hike, we went to my all time favorite diner in all of the United States. That may sound like a mighty claim, but you if you have tried their patty melt and coconut cream pie, you would agree.

Post-hike and post-patty melt, I drove us home with the windows down, Fleetwood Mac on this time. Everyone passed out, while I had some pretty awesome quiet time to myself.

Individual Sports vs Team Sports

It’s funny–people assume that because I run, I must be into all sports. They speak to me like I know what team is which. I mean, for instance, I truly don’t know if the Cubs are baseball or football. I don’t care enough to Google it. I don’t know anything about the rules of volleyball or basketball. My brain shuts down to words spoken about team sports and my eyes will glaze over. No one seems to notice.

I do understand many may feel the same way about running. It does not hurt my feelings. I hope my lack of love for your team sports does not hurt yours. There is value in each type of category, and I do believe there two broad categories. We don’t all have to be the same. Team sports teach working together and supporting one another…hopefully those lessons cross over to other teams. Individual sports teach self-reliance and overcoming internal struggles. Personally, I would rather spend my time with myself, in my head and my thoughts, working out how hard a run can be. I don’t have time, energy, or desire to control or change anyone else’s behavior. It’s a good place to work on me, and only me. Maybe I don’t like to share glory (just joking, I don’t see a lot of glory). Maybe I just like to make all the decisions about when and where I will be running. Maybe it’s freedom. Let’s not psychoanalyze me on that. I will continue to eschew team sports regardless of what I see in the Rorschach ink blots. 

I do find that whether you are a cyclist, swimmer, hiker, walker, runner, skiier, surfer, climber, yogi, skateboarder, or even if you are getting in touch with your 90s self and continue to roller blade, that I can understand you and your sport. I get that you are doing something for yourself. I don’t glaze over when you talk about your sport. I am interested.

Regardless, I recognize that all sport offers a lot of lessons. Stay happy and active, no matter which side you find yourself on.

Weekly Running Log Rundown

I was feeling pretty dead this week. So, I listened to my body and went slower.

Sunday: My legs were hella tired today. Two half marathons in one week, both sub 1:45 half’s, had my legs asking for a recovery run–slow n’ easy.

Monday: Shortie run. Had to get out of town and needed to hit the road early. Running can be time consuming. Good fun nonetheless.

Tuesday: Went for a beautiful trail run. I stopped and talked to quite a few day hikers and backpackers. After talking with them decided to take the family to Alpine Lake later that day. Ended up doing over 24 kilometers (I started my Garmin late on the hike). Wonderful day but certainly earned some beers by the end.

Wednesday: After 24 kilometers yesterday, I decided to take a day off this week.

Thursday: Feeling a bit sluggish but got out there and feel better for it.

Finally got around to listening to Ear Hustle. A very well done podcast that will be making the routine circulation in my audio experiences.

Friday: Felt pretty wiped out this week. Not running at peak performance but also feel okay with that. Sometimes your body just needs to take it easier.

Saturday: I decided to go to the trails today. The Oregon Trail. It was hot and dusty. Still feel like taking it slow, so am listening to my body.

Idaho: Alpine Lake Hike

There are many stories without narrative. This may be one as well.

After setting up our campsite, we pretty much read and laid around lazily while our children managed to cover themselves in dirt and marshmallows for the rest of the day. Then holed up in our tent and slept. It was the definition of vacation. The camping gods smiled upon us that day. 

The next morning, we woke up with no expectations and when we wanted, coffeed-upped, and went to the beach.

After having no real plan and after soaking up max amount of sun before moving on, we sort of just decided to go for a hike. That’s the way our family rolls. We get restless and want to keep moving. We went back to camp, got suited up for a hike, and went to the trailhead. I had already done some sussing out distances and whatnot on my run that morning, so knew we wanted to head toward Alpine Lake, an eight mile hike round trip.

This 6-year-old did an amazing job hiking. It started to get a little hard for him, so I busted out some bribery. I told him I would give him a dollar for every mile he hiked. He had stores of energy left after that little tidbit of information came out. It’s a trick I learned from my own father. Some parenting hacks are ageless. Don’t judge.

I packed Lady H in, uphill. She slept for a good hour or so. When we travel she will not nap in her bed, so packing her in this Manduca has proven to be infinitely worth the $15 I paid for it second-hand. I have hiked her in it across Thailand, Hong Kong, Borneo, Singapore, Malaysia, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Idaho–every time getting those naps that are worth more than my hiking shoes.

When she decided to peak out and get a good view of the mountains, she was pretty happy. I was happy to have a little buddy to chat with, too. I love how excited she is about all the things she can see. She did want to walk, but by the time she woke up we were in some gnarly terrain and I had to squelch that desire for a bit.

The final kick to the Alpine Lake was fairly steep, then a slight descent into the lake. We did start our hike in the afternoon, so we didn’t have loads of time once we arrived. I let Lady H out of the pack to run around and get her legs back. Then the horseflies made their appearance, loving our sweaty bodies. We didn’t last long there–took a few pictures, and headed back down.

Little G and I continued on the game that Mr. G taught him of ‘doubling back,’ an old cowboy trick when being pursued in the mountains. We ran ahead of Mr. G, hid in the mountains, and then let him go by. Of course then we sneak up on him and scare the bejeezers out of him. It’s an awesome trick to get your kid to trail run and enjoy the hike a bit more.It got him down the mountain with few complaints. We also brought snacks to ‘power up’ as my son refers to it. That also helps.

Lady H walked the last few kilometers before getting back to the car. She maneuvered the rocks and roots like a boss.

We did the 8 miles in 3 hours, 15 minutes.

A long, hot day in the mountains warranted some much-deserved s’mores for the kids and beers for the grown-ups.

In the morning, we packed up and headed to the Kirkham Hot Springs to soak the sore muscles. Heck, yes. Nothing like a good hotspring post-hike.

Dirk Petersilie: International Trailrunner

I met Dirk when we were in the middle of the Bucegi Mountains, running 50k through Transylvania, Romania. We became running buddies after leapfrogging on the trail for a while. As you can imagine, it was a difficult race–it was nice to have someone to chat with and help decide the best place to cross a flowing river. One of the best aspects of doing these travel races is meeting interesting people from around the world. Dirk is from Germany and I quickly realized he was a fellow world travel runner. After talking with him, he has certainly inspired me to get to Germany for some ultras, along with some other races around the world.

Hear a bit about him and his running and traveling life below.

1. How long have you been running? Since 1999 – First marathon was in 2001.

2. What is the longest distance you have run? 100km Biel, in Switzerland

3. Trail or road? Why? I prefer trail! The best combination would be trail AND mountains. I enjoy it because it is not the same pace during the whole distance, better landscape, and better for the mind and body!

4. What has been your favorite race so far? I have done 53 marathons an 15 ultras, so I have some favorites. A few of them would be the Swiss Alpine Davos and the Virgin Marathon in Interlaken, both of which are mountain runs in Swiss Alps.  The Transylvania 50k in Romania was nice, but very hard, as you know 😉 Desert Marathon in Morocco!

5. As a fellow traveling runner, what are some travel races you would suggest others to venture out and take on? All runs in the Swiss Alps. Transylvania100 for different tracks. Desert runs in Morocco are nice too! The Netherlands and Belgium have some nice trails, from marathon to ultra. Here in Germany we have the Zugspitz UltraTrail with some different courses. Also, the Helgoland Marathon on the island farthest from the mainland from Germany is very nice!

 

6. What is a race you would like to forget?  Getting Tough – The Race. It is the hardest obstacle race in Europe. After a bad illness in 2015, I did it 2016 for the 3rd time and it was my first DNF– 250 meters in front of the finish line.

7. What race are you training for currently? I train the whole year and “normal” marathons I can run whenever I want. Now I have no special focus. Maybe in the autumn some mountain runs somewhere or ultras in Germany or in the Netherlands.

8. What challenges have you come across with training? Nothing really–maybe sometimes the balancing act between family, running and my other sports.

 

9. The classic running question–why do you run? Running is a sport I can do every where, any time, and by myself. I don’t need a room, a hall, a court, a partner, or any special time to do it. I feel free during running and sometimes I have a lot time to think. I can travel to all over the world, put my shoes on, and I can run for sightseeing. When I participate in a race, I can meet and talk with new people.

Running While Camping

Camping is probably my favorite summertime activity. I am grateful to have been camping since I was baby. Getting outside into nature is deeply and innately ingrained in all of us.

Baby of the Eighties

Providing this for my children is always at the top of the parental and summer list. Watching my children connect with nature not only brings me happiness, but also recognizing their inherent fascinations with nature allows their world to be validated. There are many lessons to be learned in the wilderness–the school of the wild.

Camping is also an excellent opportunity to find new trails. Some of my fondest runs and hikes have started near a campsite. There really isn’t too much to running while camping, but I put together the logistical planning and process I go through.

Pack plastic bags to put your sweaty running clothes in. One for the clothes. One for the shoes.

Pack your running clothes in a bundle for each day you plan to run.

-If you are short on space or just want to bring less stuff, instead of packing separate shoes for your day hikes, use your running shoes. They can have duel purpose.

They looked so clean before spending two days in the mountains.

-I never plan out routes before I leave, but I do pay attention to my surroundings as I get closer to camp. Idaho offers a lot of trails though, so I don’t have to work too hard to find a place to run.

Trails for MILES

Start early. The days get hot.

-When I start running, I nearly always stumble upon a trail that would be cool to show the family for our day hike. I call it trail scouting.

Clean up after your run…you could two things here. One, find a cold lake or river to clean up in, going full into the water. Two, and my preferred choice, find a body of water and bring a handkerchief or hand towel. Clean up without freezing. But, I am a wimp when it comes to cold water. Up to you, but bring a bar of soap.
